Young Explorers Workshops teach young students the basic principles of art and technology as they create their own rudimentary video games, animations, robotics, and more. Whether your child figures out every trick in a particular video game, expresses creativity through arts and crafts, or just wants to know how things work, these workshops are sure to inspire as well as excite!
Young Explorer Workshops are one-week workshops at Overlake Christian Church's campus (9900 Willows Rd NE, Redmond, WA 98052).
Games are fun to play, but they’re even more fun to make! In Exploring Game Development, students discover what it takes to create both tabletop games and video games, including how game developers use math, science, art, and sound to create engaging player experiences.
You don’t need to be able to write code to understand how computers make decisions. In Exploring Programming and Logic, students will use fun activities and games to design and build their own decision engines. The basics of machine thinking will be explored by looking at, and building, simple combinations of logical elements.
This workshop is perfect for anyone who’s ever paused an animation or video game just to admire the beautiful artwork. Students study the skills, tools, and processes that production artists use to create art and animation for today’s video games and animations.
Robots have been a subject of fascination and entertainment for generations, both in fiction and in real life. In Exploring Robotics, students learn about how actual robots move, see, touch, and hear. Guided by teachers, students will apply theory to design, build, and program their own robotic creations.
Music and sound are essential elements of games, movies, and other interactive experiences. Students in this workshop will explore how sounds are made and heard. Students will also learn the fundamentals of sound production and will be introduced to the basic process of writing and performing their own music.
Young Explorers Workshops hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Students should arrive no more than 30 minutes prior to the start of class. There are free optional after-workshop activities most days from 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm.
Young Explorers Workshops are offered during the following one-week periods. Please note all Young Explorer Workshops will be held at Overlake Christian Church directly across the street from DigiPen Institute of Technology.
