Creating Comics and Manga

Comics share the same fundamental storytelling concepts, whether they are Japanese manga, western superhero comics, traditional graphic novels, or web comics. In the Creating Comics and Manga workshop, students learn everything required to complete their own short comic book. Topics covered include storytelling strategies, character design and development, page and panel layout, and effective use of text and dialogue. Students will learn basic character illustration techniques based on the anatomy of Japanese manga, though these skills directly translate to any other art styles as well.

Students will learn:
  • Character creation and development
  • How to use a panel layout to tell a well-paced story
  • Conveying information through a balance of words and visuals
  • Fundamental art skills for drawing and color

This course is open to students entering Grades 8 through 12.
