Junior Tabletop Game Design

If you have played Pokémon, Magic the Gathering, Dice Masters, or other tabletop games, you may have dreamed of creating your own masterpiece but didn’t know where to start. In Junior Tabletop Game Design, students will learn the basics of game design and creation. Students will explore simple card and dice game mechanics, as well as the production process required to take their idea from concept to reality.

Students will learn:

  • The history of games
  • The basic mechanics of card and dice games
  • How randomness and probability influence game mechanics
  • The game production pipeline, including design, prototyping, and production

Note: This is a non-digital workshop.

Prerequisites

This course is open to students entering Grades 4 through 7.

Schedule for 2017

Junior Workshop hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m – 3:30 p.m. Students should arrive no more than 30 minutes prior to the start of class. There are free optional after-workshop activities most days from 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm.*

*Due to the July 4th holiday, Session 2 hours will be 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  After-workshop activities will be from 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
