Junior Art Essentials

Formerly "Junior Art Fundamentals"

Producing quality artwork depends on developing a fluency with the language of art and learning the principles of organizing the elements in a particular piece. This workshop gives students a strong foundation of art techniques and knowledge from which they can pursue their creative endeavors. Students are exposed to the artistic works of the masters and learn to appreciate the rich and diverse forms of art produced around the world. No prior artistic skills are necessary.

Note: This is a non-digital workshop; students need no knowledge of computers to participate.

Students will learn:
  • Art elements such as lines, shapes, values, colors, textures, and spaces
  • Fundamental art principles, including balance, proportion, unity, harmony, variety, emphasis, rhythm, and movement
  • Essential drawing techniques such as hatching, cross-hatching, blending, and stippling
  • Working with different media, including graphite, charcoal, colored pencils, and oil pastels
