DigiPen appreciates that homeschooling is a unique journey for every family and the primary goal of the DigiPen Homeschool Academy is to offer an educational experience that meets each family’s academic needs. Directly supported by DigiPen, the Academy provides students in grades K-12 with quality opportunities to learn in an engaging student-centered environment, where teachers work to challenge students individually to take their learning to the next level.

The experience at DigiPen Homeschool Academy can be best described as being between a traditional homeschool co-op and a comprehensive school. Our exploratory and preparatory level classes run for over four days each week, and families may choose to take as few or as many courses as needed to meet their student’s learning goals. In addition to offering core general educational courses in math, reading, writing, and science, DigiPen Homeschool Academy offers a wide variety of its well-known technology courses in video game programming, art and animation, game design, engineering, and music and sound.

From a structural perspective, there are three basic levels of classes that are based on the following grade ranges:

  • Explorer for K-3
  • Junior for grades 4-7
  • Teen for grades 8-12

It is important to note that DigiPen celebrates the multi-age aspect of our courses and places students based on their current knowledge and skill. Grade ranges are used as a guideline. If you feel that your child would do best in a class outside of the typical grade range for their age, please contact one of our coordinators. They can help you place your student in the appropriate class. Many courses do not require prerequisites, but in the event that a course has prerequisites, DigiPen will assess student knowledge and ability to ensure the best placement.

The courses at the DigiPen Homeschool Academy are taught in 2.5 hour blocks, with some time allotted for a recess break. This allows adequate time for the teachers to present material and, more importantly, allows enough meaningful time for students to work on exercises and projects. We believe that this approach provides the instructor with direct evidence of a given student’s understanding, allowing the teacher to pivot to the needs of the student.

Other highlights of DigiPen Homeschool Academy include:

  • DigiPen Homeschool Academy is a drop-off program, so parents are not required to stay onsite while students are in classes.
  • Field trips are offered throughout the academic year.
  • Beyond the specific content covered in each course, students will also develop age-appropriate study skills in each course including research, annotating, notetaking, organizational skills, and writing.
  • Parents are not required to volunteer and there are no fundraising expectations.

Tours are held on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00-1:30 p.m. and Thursday mornings from 10:00-10:30 a.m. We invite you to come learn more about how DigiPen Homeschool Academy can become part of your homeschool journey, and look forward to answering any questions you may have as you plan for the next year. To schedule a time to speak with a coordinator, or to arrange a tour, please contact homeschool@digipen.edu

Game Development Academy

In addition to the many varied classes held throughout the school year, the DigiPen Homeschool Academy also holds a two year program for students in grades 8-12. The two year Game Development Academy is a multidisciplinary exploration of creating games. The class incorporates instruction in game design and theory, computer science and programming, art and animation, and sound and music.

Successful completion of the first year class is required to take the second year class. For more details visit the Game Development Academy page.

Each year of the Game Development Academy is independent for registration, but intended as a continuous two year experience. First year students will create several introductory projects as they learn the fundamental skills of game development. Then they will join into teams to culminate their year in a group game project. Second year students will be given more challenging and wholistic individual and team projects, including creating development tools, promotional marketing, and installation media.
